The UCSF Thoracic Oncology Laboratory led by David Jablons, M.D., Professor and Chief of Thoracic Surgery and Program Leader of Thoracic Oncology, recently launched its first Lung Cancer Joint Laboratory in China, an alliance with Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Disease (China National Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease) and the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College. A signing ceremony was held in Guangzhou, China on March 31, 2010 that included David Jablons, M.D., Professor and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at UCSF and Program Leader of the Thoracic Oncology Program, UCSF Department of Surgery, Michael Mann, M.D. and Zhidong Xu, Ph.D., (pictured left) Nanshan Zhong, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Director of Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Disease, Jianxing He, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and President of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College as well as numerous physicians, researchers, and students.
The joint lab will advance lung cancer research and develop molecular-based technologies for diagnosis and personalized treatment. "This opens up a great opportunity the U.S. and China to jointly study lung cancer, the deadliest of diseases", said Dr. Jablons. "It is a historic moment as we three research institutes join together and conduct international collaboration for the study of lung cancer", said Professor Zhong.
